Dodge Durango: Making a Comeback for 2014

17 Jun

Australian actress Rachel Griffiths once said, “there’s nothing as exciting as a comeback.” Maybe that’s why we’re rooting for the Dodge Durango and its latest revamp for the 2014 model year.

Back in the ‘90s, the Durango set new standards for SUVs by combining drivability along with room for eight passengers. The SUV was a hit and remained popular through the mid-2000s. But then a few tough years followed, including a production hiatus in 2010. Since then, the Durango has been quietly staging a comeback.

2014 Durango Adds Style, Efficiency

While the Durango has always emphasized functionality, the 2014 model year will balance utility with a bit more style and grace. Here’s a snapshot of what’s new:

  • More refined front-end, thanks to a redesigned grille, bumper and lower apron
  • Cleaner rear design that better integrates the trailer hitch receiver
  • Eye-catching rear tail light assemblies that span the width of the tailgate
  • New instrument panel with upgraded gauges
  • Overhauled center console
  • Dual-screen DVD/Blu-ray entertainment system for backseat passengers

The big news for the 2014 Durango is an eight-speed automatic transmission that improves fuel economy by about 9 percent. A rotary shifter in the center console plus paddle shifters on the steering wheel are part of the package too. The transmission has an Eco Mode that manages shift points and throttle response, among other things, to conserve fuel. Eco Mode, on by default, can be turned off by a button in the Durango’s center stack.

Hemi Engine for Towing and Hauling

The 2014 Durango is available with either a V-6 or a V-8. The V-6 puts out 290 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Towing capacity is 6200 pounds. The more capable V-8 makes 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque, while supporting a best-in-class towing capacity of 7400 pounds.

Safety for Family Driving

You can choose from more than 60 standard and available safety features to keep your family safe in the Durango. A few of the options are:

  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Enhanced Accident Response System (EARS)
  • Hill-start Assist
  • Ready Alert Braking
  • Enhanced Accident Response System
